| Southbay Amateur Radio Society (SOBARS). SOBARS is an active Ham Radio club with members from San Diego, National City, La Mesa, Chula Vista, Imperial Beach and San Ysidro, California. Our club callsign, K6QM, honors the momory of longtime SOBARS member John Weiting, who became a Silent Key in 1998.
SOBARS meets the first Thursday of each month at the Norman Park Center, 270 "F" Street in Chula Vista. Meetings start at 7:00 PM and always feature a guest presentation. Refreshments are served at the break and we're out by 9:00, when the center closes. Voting members pay annual dues of $10.00 to support the club's activities, but there is no need to be a member (or even be a ham) to attend the meeting. All are welcome. We have two "nets" on Tuesday night. A 2m voice net is on a local repeater, 146.640 + (107.2 P/L). The control operators do not like you to "kerchunk" the repeater. If you transmit to see whether your radio is working, please ID. Net control is Dick Cupp, K6SJA. The club holds Field Day as K6QM. Lately we have been doing Field Day at the elementary school in Eastlake, on Greensview Drive. Visitors, Ham and non-Ham alike, are always welcome at Field Day. Watch this page for additional info (or send e-mail to express your interest). SOBARS' members are active in ARES, RACES, and the Special Olympics. We conduct monthly Volunteer Examiner sessions in Chula Vista for individuals wishing to obtain or upgrade ham licenses. If you're interested in taking an exam, call SANDARC at 619/465-EXAM (3926). If you don't get a response, please email SOBARS. To get ready for your test, you may want to attend Ham school. Contact us to find out about classes. SOBARS is an ARRL Special Service Club.
