My station consists of a Yaesu FT-101EE, Yaesu FV-101B external VFO, Yaesu FO-101 Monitor Scope, Yaesu YC-601 Digital Display, and a Yaesu Landliner speaker/phone patch. I bought the equipment as a package deal in 2004; having been QRT for some 23 years. I wanted to pick up where I left off with vintage 70s equipment. At first I considered Drake twins but bought Yaesu as the FT-101E has a good reputation using Amplitude Modulation. I acquired all my Yaesu equipment from a chap in Alabama. He was selling his grandfather’s station. The equipment looks right out of the box and it is my only rig. I operate all modes with it: CW-AM-SSB. I work all bands as well (no WARC) from 10M thru 160M and have worked all over the world using a Carolina Windom 160M antenna and a Dentron Clipperton-L amp. The FT-101EE is a real workhorse that’s built like a Sherman tank. The FT-101EE suits me and I don’t feel that I am missing out by not owning newer equipment.
The only “modern” addition is an outboard MFJ Tunable DSP filter that I use rarely, but it helps especially on 40 & 80 CW. I lost the standard CW filter to an AM 6 kHz filter so the MFJ alleviates the QRM/QRN very well. FT-101s are truly marvelous radios in my opinion that were and still are well-designed and engineered, easy to work on and built really well. I have received numerous compliments on my audio, especially when I use the Yaesu YD-844A desktop mic that also is vintage 1977.
